Room 308, Thursday Evening

Kaylee was in her room, glancing at the gift River left her. She was trying very hard not to open it before Christmas. In the meantime, she was looking over her notes for the Constant Vigilance final. She really didn't want to fail.

After having packed, and taken care of all his other business, Joxer knocked on the door to 308. He was going to try his damnedest not to cry.

Kaylee opened the door and grinned when she saw Joxer. "Was hopin' it'd be you."

Then she noticed he had most of his belongings with him. "Leavin' early for break?"

Joxer's lower lip wibbled again. "I got kicked out," he said.

Kaylee blinked in confusion. "Kicked out of where?"

"Of the school," Joxer said. "I have to go home. For... forever."

Kaylee just stared, not really wanting to believe this. "What happened?"

"I got in a fight," Joxer said. "We... we almost killed each other."

"You almost got killed?" Kaylee went over to give him a hug, relieved he hadn't actually been killed.

Joxer hugged Kaylee tight and didn't let go. "Pete shot me, right in the chest. And I... kind of right in the head."

"You were shot in the chest? How did you survive?" Kaylee had so many questions. "And...you shot Pete? Is he...?

"He hit me in the armor. It saved my life," Joxer said. "And he's fine. Still has an arrow in his head, but he was laughing and happy to have gotten kicked out."

"So this is all his fault?" Kaylee frowned. "I don't want you to go."

"I don't want to go. Don't want to leave you. But I have to," Joxer said.

Kaylee clung to him. "You can't go if I'm holdin' on to ya."

"I gotta go," Joxer said. "Or else who knows what they'll do to me." He hugged her tighter. "I still love you, though. And I'll never forget you."

"I love you, too, and always will," Kaylee said, sniffling. "I could never forget you."

Joxer pulled back, a few tears wetting his cheeks. He leant in to give Kaylee one last, final kiss.

Kaylee leaned closer so Joxer could kiss her one last time. She was still sniffling woefully.

It wasn't Joxer's usual hormone-happy tonsil hockey sort of kiss. Just a tender press of the lips, his hand cupping Kaylee's chin as he kissed her.

He pulled back, and sniffled. "I don't want to say goodbye."

Kaylee looked down sadly. "I don't either."

Joxer paused, and dropped his head as he sniffled.

He turned around and headed for the door.

Kaylee ran over to hug him one last time.

"I'll miss you," she said tearfully. "I won't forget ya."

Joxer hugged her back, tightly. "I'll never forget you, either. And It's gonna hurt to be gone."

He sniffled.

"Goodbye, Kaylee."

"Goodbye Joxer," Kaylee whispered.

Joxer finally let go of the hug, and headed out the door.

Kaylee watched him leave and sighed sadly. Apparently, there was a power in the 'verse that could stop her from being cheerful.
