Room 308, Wednesday Evening

Kaylee returned to her room after spending part of break aboard Serenity. It was nice to be back. She missed the crew a lot, and she missed being the ship's mechanic. She even missed Mal yelling at her to make sure things were running smoothly. Even when they were docked on Persephone for a few days. Still, it felt like home.

Now, she was back in Fandom. And Joxer wasn't. It wouldn't be easy to move on, but Kaylee knew she probably had to. It was unlikely that he would ever return.

To take her mind off of that, she settled on the floor and began tinkering with engine parts she had brought back with her.

"Yeah, was good to get away for a bit," Kaylee said. "Besides not doin' much for the holidays, how've you been?"

"I've been well," Alphonse replied. "Same old stuff, except now with classes out I have entirely too much free time. I'm actually looking forward to next semester now, just to have something to study on the side."

"Yeah, me too," Kaylee said quietly. She was mostly looking forward to having something to do to take her mind off things.

Alphonse decided to take a spot on the floor as well across from Kaylee, instead of continuing to linger by the doorway. It would make conversing easier, he figured. From her quiet tone, he gave a concerned look. "Something the matter?"

"I'm okay," Kaylee said, smiling sadly. "Just...missin' Joxer."

"Oh," Alphonse averted his eyes towards the floor sheepishly. "Yeah... the radio mentioned what went on. I'm sorry it happened."

"Yeah, me too," Kaylee said somberly. Then she managed another smile and glanced at Alphonse. "It helps to have friends who care, though."

Alphonse nodded. "Of course," he said. "And if anything was wrong, then I'd try to make it better for you."

"That means a lot to me," Kaylee said, clearly touched.

"I'm glad," he replied, smiling. "You're a friend, so I definitely want you to be happy."

Kaylee grinned. "Well, in that case, since you're a friend, I want you to be happy too."

"You don't have to worry about me, but thank you," Alphonse said. "It's good to know you're handling things all right."

"Can't sit around and mope all day," Kaylee said. "Best to try to move on, I think."
